Strengthening human rights education internationally

Strengthening Human Rights Education internationally
Country specific results on the Institute's human rights education projects on the ground.

We collaborate with a range of actors to strengthen Human Rights Education internationally. Below we have highlighted some examples of our on-going and past work.

The difference we make

On-going projects

Georgia

In Georgia, we support the Public Defencer’s Office (PDO) to push the government for effective polices for Human Rights Education at secondary school level.

Project activities include mapping and documentation of the exiting status of Human Rights Education (HRE) in secondary schools. This is done through a baseline study and consequently report and follow-up with government and other relevant stakeholders.

The project aims at integrating human rights into educational polices as well as ensure a human rights-based approach in the learning environment.

Liberia

In Liberia, we support the Liberian Independent National Commission for Human Rights (INCHR) to ensure that police officers in the Liberian National Police (LNP) receive human rights training. With this training they know and have the skills to respect and protect the rights of citizens and residents in Liberia.

Project activities include collection of data on the current state of Human Rights Education for police officers (mapping content, training materials, learning environment, examination etc.). The results will be reported to LNP and the MoJ and a plan for how to strengthen the curricula will be initiated.

Palestine

In Palestine, the institute supports the Independent Human Rights Commission to work more strategically and efficiently with Human Rights Education (HRE) and communication.

The work includes a review of their current educational activities such as human rights training of professionals and capacity development of rights-holders so they know their human rights and how to pursue them. Based on the review, we will support the Commission to draft a new strategy so their HRE work can achieve a greater impact.

Mongolia

In Mongolia, we support the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Mangolia to strengthen Human Rights Education (HRE) of healthcare practitioners.

Outputs under the projects already include:

  • Publication of handbook on “A human rights-based approach and understanding of basic human rights” for health practitioners
  • E-learning platform upgraded and HRE module developed
  • Human rights promotional materials (leaflets on how to claim your rights etc.,) for both health practitioners and clients/patients
  • Human rights training for 300-400 health practitioners
  • Advocacy activities aimed at including human rights in the curricula of mandatory training programme of health practitioners.

Past projects

China

We developed human rights teaching material as well as textbooks for both primary and secondary school children and their teachers as well as for civil servants and the instructors at a party school. It is the first time in China that Human Rights Education material has been developed for use in schools.
