Monitoring

The Danish Institute for Human Rights monitors Denmark's fulfillment of its human rights obligations.

We monitor Danish compliance with human rights law. We do this, for example, by monitoring how Denmark implements international treaties and EU legislation in practice. In extension of this, we advise the Danish Government and Parliament.

We map out the biggest human rights challenges in Denmark as well as improvements in the area. For more information, see our status reports and our latest annual report to the Danish Parliament.

A principal task within the monitoring activities is to draft legislative consultation responses or legal briefs. In these responses, we consider whether a given bill complies with human rights law. If not, we draft amendments and other recommendations. We submit about 150 consultation responses every year.

The Institute monitors Denmark’s reporting to the United Nations and contributes by providing complementary material. We also monitor whether Denmark follows up on recommendations from the UN.

As part of our monitoring activities, we also engage in public debate on matters such as equal treatment and how to eliminate all forms of discrimination.
