Arla partnership

Since 2016, the Danish Institute for Human Rights and Arla have collaborated on the company’s commitment to respect human rights.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights and Arla have a partnership agreement in support of Arla’s human rights efforts. As part of this partnership, the Institute collaborates with Arla in further embedding respect for human rights throughout the company’s operations.

What we do

Annual workplans determine which exact workstreams and activities are implemented under the partnership agreement. During the current agreement we are amongst other things supporting Arla with:

  • Human rights country briefings to identify potential human rights risks in selected growth markets
  • Identifying potential implications for Arla of mandatory human rights due diligence legislation
  • Ad hoc advice on human rights challenges

Selected examples of previous work

In 2016 and 2017 the Danish Institute for Human Rights supported Arla in its endeavour to assess human rights impacts when entering new markets. The Institute provided advice on the methodological framework, report-outline and process through which Arla assessed human rights risks in a country context. Arla has made its human rights assessments reports available online.

In 2019 the Institute collaborated with Arla to conduct its first Human Rights Dialogue Forum to improve Arla’s business practices through dialogue and sharing of expertise with key partners amongst non-governmental organisations. It also explored the linkages between human rights and Arla’s climate action activities.
