Preparedness, response and recovery strategies that respect human rights will result in better, more just and more sustainable outcomes

What does sustainable recovery look like in practice? What have Member States and other stakeholders been doing to place Human Rights and those left behind at the centre? Are we now more resilient to the face future crises? To help us answer these questions, we will hear from Member States participating in this year’s Voluntary National Review process, as well as from national and international civil society representatives and human rights experts who will share their best practices and lessons learnt.

In conjunction with the 47th session of the Human Rights Council in 2021, 48 States and 28 organisations signed the Sustainable Recovery Pledge and committed to a COVID-19 recovery strategy aligned with the 2030 Agenda, the Paris agreement and grounded in human rights.

By signing the Sustainable Recovery Pledge, Member States and other stakeholders committed to working on risk-informed strategies based on the belief “that preparedness, response and recovery strategies that respect human rights will result in better, more just and more sustainable outcomes. Now, the question remains: how is this being done in a sustainable, just, and resilient way?

This side event will provide a platform for dialogue between states and non-state actors and an important opportunity to:

  • reflect on and share good practices and lessons learned from the recovery efforts as states are reporting in their 2030 Agenda progress through Voluntary National Reviews, including a specific focus SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 17 on partnerships for the Goals, which are under review
  • reflect on and share good practices on the commitments of the Sustainable Recovery Pledge
  • Discuss our collective preparedness for future crises and shocks based on lessons learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic.

What is the Sustainable Recovery Pledge?

The Sustainable Recovery Pledge encompasses ten concrete commitments that seek to address some of the key issues highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as: universal health coverage and vaccine equity, participatory governance practices and service delivery mechanisms that reduce inequality, and the urgent need for a green transition to halt run-away climate change.

The Pledge was launched in conjunction with the 47th session of the Human Rights Council in 2021.
