Salmon industry in Chile
Join us for a discussion of the human rights impacts of the salmon industry on workers and local communities in Chile, as well as globally.

With the launch of the report 'The Salmon industry and human rights in Chile: Sector-Wide Impact Assessment', Chile gets its first in-depth documentation of the human rights implications of the salmon industry.

On 24 November we launch the report. At the launch event we convene key global stakeholders to discuss what measures states, companies, civil society, United Nation agencies and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) can take to better respect, protect and fulfil the human rights of the workers and communities when developing a sustainable salmon industry and the aquaculture sector as a whole.

While the Sector Wide Impact Assessment (SWIA) found that the salmon industry creates jobs and provides income to those working in the sector, several adverse impacts were also documented. These include salaries below living wage levels for workers in salmon hatcheries, precarious working conditions in salmon farms and processing plants, health and safety risks and impacts, especially among divers, female workers and migrant workers. The report gives a set of recommendations for both the Chilean government and salmon businesses, as well as foreign governments and salmon companies operating in Chile.
