Working on human rights and business in Georgia

Fugleperspektiv af Tblisi, Georgien
After supporting the Georgian National Action Plan process in 2016 and 2017, the Danish Institute for Human Rights has currently renewed its collaboration with the Office of Public Defender in Georgia to deepen joint work on business and human rights.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights first worked in Georgia on business and human rights in 2016, supporting the Public Defenders Office (PDO), the Human Rights Secretariat under the Prime Minister’s Office as well as the NGO CIDA in carrying out a National Baseline assessment on the current level of implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in Georgia. This assessment fed into the development of Georgia’s 2016 Human Rights Action plan and a specific chapter on business and human rights.

The difference we make

In 2020, on request by the PDO, the institute provided capacity building on business and human rights to staff of the PDO to support the Office in playing a more active role on the topic in the context of the development of the next chapter on business and human rights in the new Human Rights Action Plan.

We subsequently engaged in a joint analysis of Georgia’s laws on Environmental Impact Assessment to determine to what degree these regulations take impacts on human rights into consideration. This research is currently envisioned to be completed in 2021.
