Acts and bylaws

The Danish Institute for Human Rights is an independent institution within the public administration.

The guidelines for our work are given in the act on the Danish Institute for Human Rights – Denmark's National Human Rights Institution, and the board has specified them further in our regulations.

Act on the Danish Institute for Human Rights – Denmark's National Human Rights Institution (Act no. 553/2012)

This act entered into force on 1 January 2013 re-establishing the institute as an institution on its own after ten years of being part of a joint institution with the Danish Institute for International Studies.

The act was amended as of August 2013, when the board of the Danish Institute for Human Rights was expanded by one member appointed by the Human Rights Council of Greenland (Act no. 656/2013 – see below).

As of May 15 2014 the act was put into force for Greenland. From this date the Danish Institute for Human Rights is also Greenland's National Human Rights Institution (Royal decree no. 393/2014 – see below).
