Realising human rights through strong civil society in Ukraine

Conference in Ukraine
By working with more than 100 NGOs in Ukraine, The Danish Institute for Human Rights has contributed to a strengthened civil society sector

From 2007 to 2012 The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) took part in programmes aiming to strengthen the civil society sector in Ukraine. By building the capacity of civil society organisations on national, regional and local levels, with special focus on rights-based approach, DIHR contributed to more qualified monitoring and reporting on human rights issues and better protection of the rights of Ukranian citiznes.

A catalyst for human rights realisation

A strong and independent civil society plays a major role in securing effective and sustainable human rights realisation. Through our engagement, DIHR has built the capacity of over 100 NGOs in Ukraine to understand, identify and practically work with human rights related issues. Among other activities, DIHR designed and executed courses, seminars, manuals and study visits to improve knowledge and practical skills on topics like access to justice and information, vulnerable groups, children’s rights, advocacy and monitoring and reporting. We also developed a toolbox on human rights based approach specifically tailored and distributed to civil society organisations in Ukraine.

Partners

The program was realised in a partnership with The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) from 2007 to 2008, and again with The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kiev, from 2010 to 2012
