Graduation of Masters in Democratic Governance

Graduation of DE.MA. masters in Venice
16 students graduates today from the Master in Democratic Governance, Human rights and Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) sponsors the Master in Democratic Governance, Human rights and Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa region (DE.MA) together with the European Union, and provides lecturers for the education. The DE.MA is hosted by the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) in Venice in cooperation with universities from Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia.

The first semester started in January 2016 and over the last week, the students have defended their theses. Their hard work culminates with a ceremony today the 14th of July, where they will receive their diplomas in the beautiful surroundings at the Ca'Foscari University in Venice. It is only the second time that students graduate from the DE.MA, but a new group have already applied to start the third round in September 2016.

We aim to strengthen both south-south and north-south collaboration and exchange in the field of governance and human rights, and we are therefore very excited about the DE.MA and the graduation of the new group of students.
Niklas Kabel Pedersen, MENA Programme Manager at the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

During the first semester of this year’s DE.MA, DIHR experts carried out two missions to Venice to teach about National Human Rights Systems as well as Religion and Human Rights. DIHR will continue to support the DE.MA, and is looking forward to seeing the third group of students start in September.

DIHR’s work with the DE.MA is supported by the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme.
