On the eve of International Human Rights Day, the European Union in Addis Ababa and the Danish Institute for Human Rights signed the “Ethiopia Human Rights Commission Addressing Critical Human Rights Concerns Nationwide” project.

The project aims to further strengthen the resources of the EHRC and support its mandate to protect and promote human rights in the regional states of Ethiopia. Implemented in partnership with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, the project will support activities on transitional justice and early warning systems on human rights violations.

The project is funded by the European Union and is designed to be implemented over a period of eighteen months.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (the Institute) has longstanding experience in supporting peer national human rights institutions worldwide. The Institute have successfully implemented projects funded by the European Union to support national human rights institutions, the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and regional networks.

The European Union stressed the indispensable role that EHRC is playing in the current context. “We believe the Ethiopian Commission can provide us with formidable tools to contribute to several key processes, including human rights protection and strengthening transitional justice processes,” said Roland Kobia, EU Ambassador to Ethiopia.

“The Danish Institute for Human Rights is committed to supporting the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission at such a critical crossroads for human rights protection in Ethiopia”, said  Mette Thygesen, International Director for the Institute.

Mr Kobia, the Ambassador of the European Union to Ethiopia, Mr Daniel Bekele, Chief Commissioner, Ms Rakeb Messele, Deputy Chief Commissioner, and Mr Ojot Miru Ojulu, Representative of the Institute, participated in a ceremony to officially launch the project at the EU Delegation.
