Women guaranteed representation in future Libyan Parliament

Debate about the constitution draft
Support of the Libyan Constitution Drafting Assembly led to the inclusion of a 25 % quota for women in the future elected parliaments.

Purpose

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) supported the Libyan Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) in order to ensure the inclusion of basic rights in the final draft constitution. DIHR’s support focused on both content and process by which expert input was provided to specific chapters of the constitution and neutral venues were created allowing for discussion of key challenges in the constitution.

DIHR has been active in Libya since the breakout of the revolution in 2011, but the work with the CDA started in February 2015 and will continue until the public adoption of the final draft.

The difference we made

Because of our support, the final draft for a new includes a 25 % quota for women in the future elected parliaments. The quota for women will ensure that their voice will be heard in future politics in Libya. Additionally, it provides a positive reflection of the Libyan legislatures and encourages more women to become active members of society.
