Guiding NHRIs in their approach to Human Rights Education

Strengthening a strategic approach to human rights education
Inspiring the community of NHRIs to take a strategic approach in their agenda-setting efforts for the advancement of Human Rights Education.

The NHRI Network on Human Rights Education has published the "Guide to a Strategic Approach to Human Rights Education – How NHRIs can benefit from their unique position and set winning priorities".

Purpose

Many National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) tend to focus on own face-to-face training activities and development of educational material. While these activities can yield numerous results, the NHRI Network on Human Rights Education (HRE) argues in the guide, that if NHRIs are to be more effective in their HRE efforts, they need to work across mandate areas and adopt a strategic approach to HRE.

The difference we made

The Danish Institute for Human Rights has facilitated the process of developing the guide.

The guide seek to inspire the community of NHRIs to take a strategic approach in their agenda-setting efforts for the advancement of HRE.

With the guide, the NHRIs have a hands-on tool supporting them adopting a strategic approach to HRE, based on guided exercises and reflections on the specific contexts of NHRIs, the challenges they meet and the unique role and responsibilities of NHRIs in the field of HRE. The guide also suggests common standards for NHRIs’ work on HRE.

Using the Guide, NHRIs will have a greater reach in their HRE work and be able to create a more sustainable impact on the education sector by combining the implementation of own educational programmes with a working towards changing the formal structures for HRE.
