EU Agency releases annual report on fundamental rights

The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights points to problems with hate crimes, protection of migrants' rights and the need for a fundamental rights strategy in its annual report for 2013.

When people in the EU fall victim to hate crimes, not all choose to report the incidents.

That is the conclusion in the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) annual report for 2013, released today.

FRA surveys on violence and discrimination towards LGBT people, on violence against women, and on antisemitism. In all three categories, under-reporting among victims is an issue.

- FRA's annual report points to many fundamental rights challenges in Europe today. And the concrete suggestions we have put forward should help ensure that rights protection across the EU makes further progress, FRA director Morten Kjærum says.

The annual report also points to the urgent need for EU-wide action to safeguard the lives and rights of migrants trying to gain access to the EU.

Thirdly, FRA's report suggests the creation of an internal fundamental rights strategy within the EU in order to consolidate the EU as a beacon of human rights worldwide.
