The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) has released a statement calling for the immediate release of the human rights defender, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja:

"The Danish Institute for Human Rights is deeply concerned with the safety and wellbeing of Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, a Danish citizen, human rights defender and founder of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, currently imprisoned in Bahrain. Mr al-Khawaja was jailed in 2011 following public protests in Bahrain during the Arab Spring and was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. Mr al-Khawaja has been on hunger strike since February, protesting his detention and treatment in prison. His health is currently in an extremely critical state, and doctors fear for his life. The Danish Institute for Human Rights is deeply concerned with his situation, and supports the efforts towards an immediate release of Mr al-Khawaja.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights encourages all actors, public and private, to use appropriate leverage in order to resolve the situation. The Formula 1 race, scheduled to take placed in Bahrain on 20-22 April, presents an opportunity to emphasize the need for such a resolution. In line with the responsibility of business to respect human rights, we encourage the Formula 1 organization, the Formula 1 teams and their business partners to use all available leverage towards this end."
