Research project

Freedom of religion or belief, gender equality and the SDGs

This project explores the relationship between freedom of religion or belief, gender equality and the SDGs.

The project is part of, and provides input to, a broader expert consultation process, co-organised with the Stefanus Alliance International in cooperation with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief and Sustainable Development, co-led in this effort by UNFPA and OHCHR.

The process is funded by the Danish and Norwegian Foreign Ministries.

The expert consultation process involved a diverse range of secular and faith-based experts from different institutional, professional, religious and geographic backgrounds and with expertise in different areas.

Through a series of workshops, the experts have explored the nexus between FoRB and gender equality in relation to different SDGs, formulating recommendations and concrete suggestions for action in each of these contexts.

Discussions at the workshops have been summarised in the report Promoting Freedom of Religion or Belief and Gender Equality in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals.
