Between 2010 and 2020, the Danish Institute for Human Rights collaborated with Nestlé on the company’s commitment to respecting human rights.

Under this partnership, the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) provided support to Nestlé to integrate human rights into Nestlé policies and procedures through review of policies, and conducting Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs) in country operations. Each of these impact assessments typically included:

  • In-depth interviews at the country head office with all the relevant managers: Human Resources, Legal, Marketing, Security, Safety & Health, Environment, and Procurement & Supply Chain
  • Factory and Distribution Centre visits to conduct interviews with management and various employee groups (unionized and non-unionized, male and female, junior and senior)
  • Visits to tier-1 suppliers and interviews with management and employee groups
  • Visits to farmers or farmer associations if commodities are sourced locally, as well as processing mills, including interviews with farmers, farm workers and mill owners and mill workers
  • Visits to adjacent communities to conduct interviews with community leaders and members
  • Engagement with local representatives of trade unions, government, local communities, NGOs, International Organisations, academia etc.
  • A debriefing session with Nestlé country operation management, and
  • An action plan drafted with reference to the DIHR’s recommendations.
