Begins: November 19th 2009
Ends: November 20th 2009
The conference takes place at the Danish Institute for Human Rights and lasts for two days. It is scheduled to include a maximum of 50 participants including guest researchers and staff from DIHR. The regional focus for the conference is countries during transition from plan to market in Europe and Asia and this year our guest researchers represent China and Kyrgyzstan. They will present their work together with contributions from external researchers from Eastern Europe and Russia. A severe consequence of the economic transition in these regions has been that the end of the full employment priority of the socialist systems has caused many people to loose their jobs and be forced to secure their livelihood in or outside of a formal, often incomplete, labor market. For many people, migration has been the most attractive, and for some the only possible, solution to support themselves and their families. Thus, the main area of the conference will be protection of the right to gain one’s living by work and the functioning of labor markets - hereby the possibilities of citizens to claim these rights within their local environment. Migration will be given special, but not exclusive, attention along with complaints mechanisms and legal aid related to labor issues.
