Supporting national human rights institutions and their networks

Education and support help strengthening national human rights institutions and their regional and global networks to advance common agendas.
SANTIAGO, CHILE - NOVEMBER 27: Demonstrators take part in a protest demanding the resignation of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and amnesty for people incarcerated during the social unrest of 2019.

Regional action plans for human rights defenders, joint responses to threats against national human rights institutions and meetings involving human rights stakeholders to discuss transboundary issues.

These are some of the initiatives that are being facilitated by the Danish Institute of Human Rights in the work with national human rights institutions and their networks under the NHRI·EU Project.

120 national human rights institutions across the globe are connected via regional and international networks. Many national human rights institutions share a common concern for the safety of human rights defenders and a dedication to the sustainable development goals.

By improving coordination and interaction with the global and regional human rights systems, national human rights institutions are strengthened in their role and mandate to promote and protect human rights in the changing global context for human rights.

About the NHRI-EU Project

The project aims to strengthen the capacities of national human rights institutions, individually as well as collectively, in line with the UN Paris Principles. The goal is to increase their impact and effectiveness in promoting and protecting human rights, with a specific focus on their activities related to human rights defenders and the sustainable development goals. It is a global project involving NHRIs and networks in all regions of the world.

The project has two tracks:

  1. Working with national human rights institutions networks (GANHRI and the regional networks) in order to improve coordination and interaction with the global and regional human rights systems.
  2. Improving the capacity of networks to support their members so that NHRIs can be better at doing their work nationally.

The project started with a first phase from 2016 to 2018. In January 2019 it entered its second phase (2019-2021).
