Mali

We have worked in Mali since 2008. In collaboration with Mali's security forces and other state actors we contribute to trust building and the protection and promotion of human rights.

Together with neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, Mali is a priority country for the Danish Institute for Human Rights. Our work in the three countries contributes to the fight against terrorism in the Sahel-region.

What we do

Our main objective in Mali is to contribute to a well-functioning national human rights system and to build trust between Mali’s security forces and the population. We help key state human rights actors, including the National Human Rights Commission and civil society organisations to improve their capacity in exercising their mandate and we work in complementarity for a better protection of the rights of individuals. We support the development of internal oversight mechanisms and human rights training of the Internal Security Forces, enabling them to fight impunity and build a relationship of trust with the population.

Our work is funded by the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Sahel (EUTF for the Sahel) and DANIDA .

The team includes a national representative, a national human rights advisor, a project officer and a financial officer in our local office in the capital Bamako.
