The Danish Institute for Human Rights Partnership Programme in China 2018-2021

The Institute started a four-year programme in 2018, which is part of Denmark’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with China. The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to increased realisation of civil, economic and social rights in China through a functioning legal system and effective access to justice for all. The programme will focus on:

  • The protection of the rights of accused and detainees by law and in practice through improved legislation and enhanced knowledge and capacity of Criminal Procedure Law enforcement personnel.
  • Strengthened human rights education for primary and secondary school children and civil servants.

On the rule of law component, the Institute is working with universities and academic institutions in China on the new revisions to the Chinese Criminal Procedure Law from 2018 and training of prosecutors on the implementation of these. This entails field studies mapping the gaps between the law and actual implementation, the results of which will be used towards developing targeted training seminars to prosecutors across China.

On the human rights education component, the Institute has previously supported our Chinese partner in developing the first ever human rights education materials for primary and secondary schools in China as well as human rights education materials for civil servants. Currently, the Institute is supporting our Chinese partner in securing a broad dissemination of the materials as well as developing targeted training modules for school teachers and human rights instructors to secure anchoring of the materials.
