New guide helps companies respect human rights in Serbia

A new country guide will help companies to operate with respect for human rights in Serbia.

The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, together with The Danish Institute for Human Rights, has launched the Human Rights and Business Country Guide Serbia. The Country Guide is a free, comprehensive website that provides information to help companies respect human rights when they operate in Serbia.

The Serbia Country Guide aims to provide, on one platform, everything a company needs to know to operate sustainably in Serbia. This includes: demographic, political and economic information about the Serbian business context; recommendations from international and local actors on avoiding human rights violations; and information from the government and international institutions on how to align company development projects with national priorities.

All information in the Serbia Country Guide is provided free of charge. The report draws upon more than 100 Serbian and international sources, including the United Nations, the World Bank, the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights and dozens of other NGOs and research institutions.

As well as improving the human rights performance of companies operating in Serbia, the Serbia Country Guide also aims to provide a platform for government, civil society and businesses to engage in dialogue and constructive engagement toward the production of further information and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability.

The Serbia Country Guide was produced by Belgrade Centre for Human Rights in partnership with The Danish Institute for Human Rights. The project was funded by the The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade.

About the Human Rights and Business Country Guide

The Human Rights and Business Country Guide provides country-specific guidance to help companies respect human rights and contribute to development.

For companies to manage their potential human rights impacts, they must have comprehensive information about the local human rights context in which they operate. The Country Guide provides a systematic overview of human rights issues for particular attention by companies. For each issue, the Guide provides guidance on how to ensure respect for human rights in company operations or in collaboration with local suppliers and business partners.

The Country Guide was launched in December 2014, and will expand to cover 40 countries by 2016.
