Freedoms and civic participation

Public participation concerns the right of every individual to be part of and to actively contribute to public life. That means, for instance, that you can express yourself freely. And that you have the right to assemble. For this reason, the work of the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) with public participation takes its point of departure in the Freedom Rights. Freedoms like that of opinion, expression, association and assembly; the right to participate in public affairs, vote and stand for election; and the rights to information, privacy and physical integrity form the basis of this DIHR’s work in this field. We work with various partners to promote public participation. Most often, this means civil society organizations and other human rights actors nationally and internationally. But we also cooperate with governments as well as media and the academic world. We do this because we find that all of these actors in their own way contribute to the strengthening of the public participation of the population in a given society. The right to public participation is strongest when all these groups are actively involved in the fight for public participation.
